Subnautica 2 Survival Guide: How to Actually Stay Alive on Proteus

Survival games have a rhythm. The first few hours are panic. Then you stabilize. Then you thrive. Subnautica 2's version of this curve is steeper than most because it adds disease and environmental hazards on top of the usual food, water, and oxygen.

Here's how to get through the panic phase as quickly as possible.

Oxygen Is Everything

This sounds obvious. It is obvious. And yet drowning is still the number one cause of death for new players. The issue isn't that people forget about oxygen. It's that they misjudge how fast it runs out at depth.

Your base oxygen capacity is about 45 seconds. At 100 meters, effective time drops to maybe 35 seconds because of pressure. At 200 meters, closer to 25. The O2 Tank doubles your base capacity but pressure still applies.

The rule I follow: turn back when your O2 reads 30 seconds in open water or 45 seconds in caves. It feels conservative but I haven't drowned since I started doing it. Before that I drowned seven times in my first ten hours.

The Propulsion Pack helps. You swim faster so you cover more distance per second of oxygen. Get it early. Third or fourth craft. The difference between swimming and using the Pack is the difference between reaching the surface and watching it get farther away.

Water: The Quiet Killer

Food is easy. Cooked fish. Marblemelons later. Water is harder and more urgent. You die of thirst faster than hunger.

The early water solution is Bladderfish. Filter them in the Fabricator for clean water. Each gives 20 units. You need about 50 units per in-game day. Two to three Bladderfish per day keeps you alive. Tedious but sustainable.

Mid-game you want a Water Filtration Machine. It produces large bottles of water passively. Costs power. Needs a base with stable energy. Build it as soon as you have a Thermal Plant online. The quality of life improvement is enormous. No more hunting Bladderfish. No more dehydration panic.

The real solution is Marblemelons. Grow four plants in an indoor pot. Each melon gives both food and water. Eat three. Knife the fourth for seeds. Replant. Infinite food and water from four plants and one pot. This renders the entire survival system trivial. I set mine up around hour eight and have not worried about resources since.

Power Management

Your base needs power. Your Tadpole needs power. Your tools need batteries which need chargers which need power. Everything comes back to power.

Solar panels work above 100 meters. Below that they barely function. Bioreactors are fine if you feed them constantly but that's a chore. Nuclear is powerful but requires rare materials and fuel rod management.

Thermal is the answer. One thermal vent with three to four Thermal Plants powers a full base indefinitely. No maintenance. No fuel. No babysitting. Find a vent. Build near it. Connect with Power Transmitters. Done.

I built my first base on solar and regretted it. I built my second base on a bioreactor and spent hours gathering fuel. My third base is on thermal and I haven't touched the power system in 20 hours. Thermal is the only power source that respects your time.

The Tadpole Makes or Breaks Your Run

Hours three through eight without the Tadpole are miserable. You're slow. You have no storage. You can't go deep. Every expedition is a round trip measured in oxygen seconds.

The Tadpole changes everything. Mobile oxygen. Storage. Speed. Depth capability. Protection from most threats. The game splits into before-Tadpole and after-Tadpole eras.

Rush it. Prioritize the Mobile Constructor Bay fragments. Gather materials aggressively. Build the Tadpole by hour five at the latest. Every hour you delay is an hour of inefficient, dangerous travel.

Once you have it, the first upgrade should be a chassis swap based on your playstyle. Scout for explorers. Cargo for hoarders. Deep once you're ready for the Trench.

Base Progression: Small to Large

Your first base should be one room. Multipurpose Room. Hatch. Fabricator. Two lockers. Solar panel. That's it.

Second expansion: Scanner Room. This is the most important room in the game. It finds resources. It finds fragments. It warns you about nearby creatures. Build it as your second room. Upgrade its range.

Third expansion: Moonpool. Charges and repairs your Tadpole. Required for chassis swaps. Build this before you add more Multipurpose Rooms.

Only after these three structures should you expand for comfort. Water Filtration. Growbeds. Decorations. The functional core matters more than square footage.

Health Management

You start with 100 health. It regenerates slowly. Very slowly. Too slowly to rely on in dangerous situations.

Medkits are crafted at the Fabricator. Carry two at all times. One bite from a medium predator takes about 30 health. Two bites and you're critical. The time to heal is before you need it.

The First Aid Kit fabricator is a base module. It produces medkits automatically. Slow production rate. Maybe one every few minutes. Build it when you have spare resources. The passive generation is more valuable than it seems.

Environmental damage is a thing on Proteus. Thermal vents burn you. Some biomes have toxic water near certain plants. The Bloom parasite areas deal damage over time. You can't always see what's hurting you. If your health is dropping and nothing is attacking, check your surroundings for environmental hazards.

The Proteavirus Mechanic

This is what separates Subnautica 2 from other survival games. The Proteavirus is a background mechanic that becomes more relevant as the story progresses. In the early game it's mostly flavor. But around hour ten you'll start encountering areas where the virus affects gameplay.

Infection zones reduce your maximum health over time. The effect is gradual. You might not notice until you suddenly have 70 health instead of 100. There are items that mitigate this. The Reinforced Dive Suit helps. Certain Biomods provide resistance.

I won't spoil the story behind the virus. But mechanically, know that it exists and it escalates. Don't panic when your health bar shrinks. There are solutions.

When to Go Deep

The Shallows are safe. The Vine Tangle is manageable. The Reef Shelf requires caution. The Fungal Basin is dangerous. The Trench is actively hostile. The Void is death.

Don't push deeper than your equipment supports. If a biome feels impossible, you're probably under-equipped. Return with a better chassis. More Biomods. More supplies.

The game gates content through pressure. Not invisible walls. Not level requirements. Pressure. If you can survive the depth, you can go there. But surviving the depth requires preparation. There's a difference between reaching a biome and being able to function in it.

My advice: master each depth tier before moving to the next. Know the Shallows completely before you commit to the Vine Tangle. Know the Vine Tangle before you explore the Reef Shelf. The game rewards methodical progression.
